There are several methods of tattoo removal, for example, surgical excision and abrasion by CO2 laser or Erbium laser. But scar-free tattoo removal is possible only with the Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser. Its selective mode of action destroys pigments without damaging the skin.

Treatment methods

At the Centre Laser Sorbonne we use a Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser (Medlite IV from HOYA ConBio). This laser acts photomechanically. Very short pulses pulverize the tattoo pigments, enabling the body to eliminate them.
In addition to avoiding unsightly scars, this laser offers other advantages. It acts on all skin colors, from the lightest to darkest, and preserves the skin's texture, to the point that a new tattoo can even be made in the same area.

Potential counter-indications

Pregnancy constitutes a counter-indication as a matter of principle. The tattoo must be at least two months old. The skin area must not be tanned (risk of hypo-pigmentation) and must not be exposed to the sun for two months after each session (risk of hyper-pigmentation).

How the session is conducted

As for all laser treatments, protective eyewear must be worn by both the patient and the doctor. The session is relatively painless; however, an anesthetic cream may be applied to the tattooed area.

After cleansing of the tattooed area, the laser shots are begun.
The sessions are scheduled six to eight weeks apart. During this time the destroyed pigment will be progressively eliminated by the body.
The number of sessions varies, depending on the type of tattoo:
Ritual tattoo: Two to three sessions
Amateur tattoo: Approximately five sessions
Professional tattoo: Sometimes ten sessions or more

After treatment …

A protective bandage is applied after each session and will be replaced according to a schedule determined by the doctor until the area heals, usually about eight days. In rare cases a temporary urticarial reaction (itching) may occur.

The cost of your treatment

It depends on the size of the area to be treated. Each session varies in price from 55 to 170 €.
